illing Ourselves

(Summer 1987)
Words by Howard Scott
Music by Howard Scott and Mike Hering

You’re beautiful and you’re stuck on him.
But you’re killing yourself trying to make him
Fall in love with you, just fall in love with you.
As the winds of time fly on by,
You’ll never know till you look in his eye
If he’s in love with you, if he’s really in love with you.

Chorus
Don’t you know that we’re killing ourselves
Trying to fall in love?
We’re running close to the edge,
So close to the stars up above.
Can’t you see that we’re killing ourselves
Trying to fall in love — LAST TIME TO CODA —
When we should be trying to fall
Into each other’s arms.

We walked through the park hand in hand.
We kissed on the beach in the heat and the sand
Of another way and another age.
Then came the storms with lightning and rain
Of broken hearts and unwanted pain
As you walked away into another day.

Chorus

I’ve met you once, seen you twice,
But when I speak to you, you’re as cold as ice
Like you were yesterday, like you were yesterday.
You’re beautiful and can’t you see
That I’m killing myself trying to make you
Fall in love with me, just fall in love me?

Chorus

— CODA —
When we should be trying to fall-
When we should be trying to fall-
When we should be trying to fall-
Into each others arms?

Notes: I wrote this one in my head the summer of 1987 as I walked on the road and field of the Girl Scout camp where I worked. When I met Mike, this was the first song we did together.
